First introduced in 1953, Matchbox cars became widely popular. The number of available models increased to 75 in 1959 and continued at 75 for many years. Matchbox cars had their wheels mounted
on thick axels. To compete with Hot Wheels, Matchbox introduced Superfast models in 1969. Matchbox cars with the thick axels are now referred to as Regular Wheels Series 1-75.
Models in the 1-75 series changed from time to time. A letter designation is used the identify the particular model in the series, eg. Regular Series No 1A, No 1B etc. The model number stamped
on the cars' chassis shows only the model number, not the letter designation. There are variations within each particular model. The variations could be subtle, such as minor changes in castings,
or highly noticeable such as different colours or markings. Some variations are extremely rare. Vintage Matchbox cars are highly collectible, especially those in good condition and those that
include the original box
